1. Choosing the Right Fertilizer
To select the best fertilizer for your crop:
Do a soil test first (see below).
Identify your cropβs main nutrient need:
Leafy vegetables (spinach, cabbage): Need more Nitrogen β Use Urea or Ammonium Sulphate
Root crops (potato, carrot): Need more Phosphorus & Potassium β Use DAP, MOP
Fruiting crops (tomato, chilli): Balanced NPK (e.g., 10:26:26) helps flowering and fruiting.
Prefer organic compost or vermicompost to improve soil texture and microbial life along with chemical fertilizers.
π‘ 2. Making Organic Compost at Home
You can create nutrient-rich compost with kitchen waste:
Use items like: vegetable peels, dry leaves, fruit scraps, old tea leaves (no oil/salt).
Layer green (wet) and brown (dry) waste in a bin or pit.
Turn it every 7β10 days.
Ready in 30β60 days.
This compost improves soil health and adds nutrients slowly.
π§ͺ 3. How to Do Soil Testing
Soil testing helps you apply only the needed nutrients:
Collect soil from 6β8 points in your field (4β6 inches deep).
Dry and mix samples well.
Send to a local Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), agriculture university, or use private labs like Mahindra Agribusiness, IFFCO, etc.
Report tells you pH, NPK values, organic matter, etc.
Based on the report, you can use fertilizer dose calculators available online or via agriculture extension services.
