Zero liquid discharge sodium acetate process
Overview
Objective:
Produce sodium acetate (CH₃COONa) while ensuring zero liquid discharge — i.e., all water and by-products are recovered, recycled, or converted into solid waste.
CH₃COOH (Acetic Acid)+NaOH (Sodium Hydroxide)→CH₃COONa (Sodium Acetate)+H₂O
2. Process Steps (ZLD-Oriented Flow)
Step 1: Reaction
Reactants: Acetic acid + Caustic soda (or sodium carbonate/bicarbonate).
Operation: Continuous stirred reactor or batch reactor.
Output: Aqueous sodium acetate solution (~20–30% concentration).
Step 2: Filtration / Clarification
Remove any undissolved solids, impurities, or catalyst residues.
Equipment: Filter press or clarifier.
Step 3: Evaporation (Multiple Effect Evaporator - MEE)
Concentrate sodium acetate solution to high solids (60–70%) using steam-driven MEE.
Condensate generated from MEE is condensate-quality water → recycled back into process (for dilution, washing, or cooling).
Reduces liquid volume drastically.
Step 4: Crystallization
Concentrated liquor cooled in a crystallizer.
Sodium acetate trihydrate (CH₃COONa·3H₂O) crystals form.
Mother liquor (still containing sodium acetate) recycled back to evaporator → no discharge.
Step 5: Solid-Liquid Separation
Crystals separated via centrifuge or filter.
Wet cake → sent to dryer.
Filtrate → recycled to crystallizer/evaporator.
Step 6: Drying
Rotary or fluid-bed dryer used to remove remaining moisture.
Product: Anhydrous sodium acetate (dry salt) or trihydrate crystals, depending on requirement.
Step 7: Condensate and Recycle Management
All condensates from evaporation and drying:
Collected and treated in Condensate Polishing Unit (CPU) (if needed).
Reused for:
Process dilution,
Boiler feed,
Cooling tower makeup.
No liquid waste leaves the plant — achieving Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD).
3. By-Product / Waste Management
Waste Stream Treatment Final Disposal
Mother liquor Recycled to evaporator Nil discharge
Condensate Polished & reused Nil discharge
Sludge (if any) Filtered and disposed as solid waste Solid landfill
