3. Role as a Carbon Source in Biological Treatment
a) Denitrification
Denitrifying bacteria use acetate as an electron donor to convert nitrates (NO₃⁻) and nitrites (NO₂⁻) into nitrogen gas (N₂).

b) Enhanced Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR)
Polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) use acetate as a carbon source to store energy (as polyhydroxyalkanoates, PHAs).

c) BOD Balancing
