SULFATE ANTISCALANTS FOR INDUSTRIAL PLANTS
Sulfate antiscalants are specialty chemicals that inhibit nucleation and crystal growth of:
- Calcium sulfate (CaSO₄)
- Barium sulfate (BaSO₄)
- Strontium sulfate (SrSO₄)
They are critical where sulfate cannot be fully removed upstream.

Sodium Sulfate (Na₂SO₄) in Wastewater Treatment – Reality Check
Unlike alum, ferric salts, or lime, sodium sulfate is not a primary treatment chemical. Its role is supporting or indirect, depending on the process.
In some biological systems, sulfate presence supports sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) under anaerobic conditions.
Used mainly in research or specialized industrial effluents.
- Used in lab studies to:
- Simulate sulfate load
- Test membrane rejection
- Evaluate scaling tendency
- In certain ion exchange or electrochemical processes, sodium sulfate acts as a neutral electrolyte.
- Used in electrodialysis (ED/EDR) trials.
Recovered sodium sulfate from RO–MEE–crystallizer systems is:
- Stored
- Reused in low-grade applications
- Sold to detergent / textile buyers (after QC)
Adds sulfate, increasing:
- CaSO₄ scaling
- RO fouling risk
- Evaporator scaling
Makes ZLD more expensive
Increases sludge handling problems
- Sodium sulfate is often:
- Generated, not added
- Present in mixed salt cake
- Recovered as a saleable by-product
Quality check required:
- Moisture
- Chloride
- Heavy metals
- Textile dyeing
- Detergent manufacturing
- Pulp & paper
- Chemical manufacturing
- Power plant ZLD systems
Some ETPs buy low-cost sodium sulfate only for:
- Pilot trials
- Electrochemical systems
- Neutral electrolyte applications
If so, industrial grade (98%) is sufficient.
. Calcium Sulfate (CaSO₄) Scale
Most manageable sulfate scale
Methods
- Weak acid cleaning (citric, sulfamic)
- Chelating agents (EDTA, NTA)
- Acid + dispersant blends
- Hot water circulation (60–70 °C)
Typical CIP Conditions
- pH: 3–4
- Time: 6–12 hours
Extremely difficult scales
Specialty Methods Only
- Strong chelant-based dissolvers
- Alkaline chelation systems
- Redox-assisted dissolvers
- Multi-step chemical treatments
Used when chemical cleaning is ineffective.
- High-pressure water jetting
- Pigging (pipes)
- Tube brushing
- Manual descaling
Thermal shock (limited success)
Controlled dissolution by temperature cycling
Offline soaking
Calcium sulfate
- Low-pH chelant cleaning
- Circulation at low pressure
- Temperature ≤ membrane limit
Barium sulfate
- Often irreversible
- Membrane replacement common
PPE mandatory
Chelants can mobilize heavy metals
Neutralize spent CIP before disposal
Follow MSDS strictly
